EU Migration Pact Accused of Creating 'Fortress Europe'
Bas Eickhout Leads Criticism of Proposed Measures
Europe's borders are set to become more secure under a new migration pact, but critics argue that it will come at a great cost to human rights.
Bas Eickhout, a Dutch member of the European Parliament for the GreenLeft-PvdA party, has accused the European Union (EU) of creating a "Fortress Europe" with its new migration pact. The pact, which is still being negotiated, aims to strengthen the EU's external borders and reduce the number of migrants entering the bloc.
However, Eickhout warns that the pact will only make it more difficult for refugees and asylum seekers to find safety in Europe. He points to the fact that the pact includes a provision that would allow for the detention of children at the EU's external borders.
"This is unacceptable," Eickhout said in a statement. "Children should never be detained, especially not in such a harsh and dangerous environment." Eickhout's concerns are echoed by other human rights groups, who argue that the pact will violate the rights of refugees and asylum seekers.
