Real Madrid secured a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout victory over Manchester City after a 1-1 draw in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal on Wednesday. The tie ended 4-4 on aggregate after the teams had drawn 3-3 in the first leg in Madrid.
Riyad Mahrez gave City the lead in the first half of the second leg, but Rodrygo's late equalizer forced extra time. The match remained deadlocked after 30 minutes of extra time, and the tie went to penalties.
Karim Benzema, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, and Rodrygo all converted their penalties for Real Madrid, while Joao Cancelo's effort was saved by Thibaut Courtois. Mahrez, Ilkay Gundogan, and Kevin De Bruyne scored for City, but Bernardo Silva's penalty was saved by Courtois to give Real Madrid the victory.
The result means that Real Madrid will face Bayern Munich in the Champions League semifinals. The first leg of the semifinal will be played in Madrid on April 25, with the second leg in Munich on May 2.
